00 - Revit in a Nutshell
A short interactive exercise on creating and documenting a basic building from a blank screen start with very little supplemental explanation, designed to show how quick and easy it can be to define and extract useful data from the software and to relax the delegates into the subject.
01 - Introduction to the principles of BIM
An important opportunity for questions and answers on the wider topic of BIM and it impact on the user, the project and corporate environment. This module explores simple truths and benefits, as well as exploding some myths and getting behind some of the hype in an effort to understand what BIM promises to deliver.
02 - UI Tour, Project Navigation and View Creation
Introducing users to the tool menus and screen layout before describing the different methods for interrogating the model to extract views such as Plans, Sections, Elevations, Callouts, Drafting views, 3D Isometrics, Perspectives and Walkthrough movies. Also included due to the closely related functionality is the placement and properties of grids and levels.
03 - Element Selection and Manipulation
Delegates explore the various object selection methods and start to investigate the Type and Instance element properties as well as node-point and snaps as a means of basic manipulation.
04 - Visibility Control and Categorisation
Creating a model is pointless unless the published output can be customised to suit expectation, and this module looks to uncover the options for defining and tweaking the aesthetics of the deliverables in ever-increasing granularity, from Project-Wide Settings, View Specific Overrides, Element Specific Overrides and finally Individual Line Overrides. Served with a side order of exercise on modifying element visibility.
05 - Model Development Methodology
One of the shortest but arguably the most important module in the series describes the best-practice protocols around specifying the level of detail for building a model and component library, focusing on the BIM objectives of managing data effectively and efficiently with managed complexity of 3D geometry and 2D linework
06 - Wall Creation and Manipulation
The placement of conceptual wall elements in relation to levels and attached roofs, floors and ceilings plus the editing of said walls into funny shapes where required. Delegates learn about common modification tools and the setting-out position of walls before performing an exercise, laying out walls.
07 - Floors, Roofs and Ceilings
This module explores the universal sketching rules for Revit and how slabs relate to walls and supports. Delegates learn about basic roof design and the control of slopes.
08 - Window, Door and Component Use
Family terminology is explained and the nuances of free-standing and hosted component placement are explored.
09 - System Family Editing
Having defined conceptual components to represent main building elements delegates now learn how to construct composite system families and the impact of function and wrapping of layers.
10 - Basic Schedules and Legends
This interactive session looks at the generation of schedules as a means if counting and quantifying components and materials but also as a viable means of entering and manipulating data also. Legends provide a graphical visualisation of elements to accompany schedules.
11 - Geometry Formation and In-Place Families
Interactive session which looks to explore the creation and manipulation of basic solid and void forms, used to create all objects in Revit. The five form variants, Extrusion, Blend, Revolve, Sweep and Swept Blend are experimented with to define various theoretical shapes.
12 - Massing Tools and the Building Maker
Conceptual massing provides an environment for exploring the shape and form of proposed buildings. The Building Maker tools allow the rapid conversion of these forms into building elements for quick spatial analysis, visuals and drawings.
13 - Stairs Ramps and Railings
Delegates explore the characteristics of simple staircase and ramp modelling along with the handrailing which can be integral to the stairs and ramps or stand-alone.
14 - Basic Curtain Walls
After looking at the fundamental principles and identifying the various component parts of a curtain wall, this module goes on to explore logical grid spacing and bespoke panel allocation plus more advanced panel and mullion design and complex shapes.
15 - Room Data and Colour-Fill
This module deals with the definition of rooms within enclosed spaces and explains which elements form boundaries to room placement. Distinction is made between rooms, associated data and the tags which are assigned. Also covered in this important module are room schedules, room area and volume, colour schemes, area plans and the export of data for environmental analysis.
16 - 2D Draughting and Annotation
An important aspect of BIM workflow is understanding the distinction between 2D, 3D and meta-data in the formation of the model. Most drawing views tend to be a hybrid 2D/3D representation with annotation underpinned by object properties. This topic is explored during the lecture and exercise.
17 - Sheet Compilation and Publication
This module looks into the creation of drawing sheet views and the collation of the various interrogations of the model in preparation for publication.
18 - Basic Subdivision and Collaboration
Covering some of the most critical skills and methodologies of working in a team, this module uncovers the collaborative protocols associated with working and communicating within a discipline and as part of a larger project infrastructure.
19 - Introduction to the Principles of Family Editing
Delegates are exposed to the basic process by which all components are created. Breaking the workflow into ten easy stages for reliable family creation, this module discusses all aspects of parametrics, geometry and view-specific representation.
